THE WOMEN AT AWiA
WELCOME TO AWiA
Where We’re All About Celebrating the Amazing Women in Automotive!

Every movement starts with a spark. For Amazing Women in Automotive (AWiA), that spark came from the heart and vision of Maylan Newton.
As CEO of Educational Seminars Institute, Maylan spent decades teaching shop owners and advisors. Along the way, he witnessed a painful pattern: women’s voices being dismissed in training rooms and roundtables. At one event, a woman he knew and respected asked a good question – only to be brushed off. Moments later, a man asked the same thing and was validated. That moment struck Maylan deeply. He knew women needed a space of their own; a place where they could speak without being spoken over.
With that conviction, Maylan gave the go-ahead to build a community for women in automotive and personally funded the effort. He is remembered as the founding father of AWiA, whose love for this industry and belief in women’s voices continue to guide us.
Around this same time, Dori Eppstein was leading a small but passionate group of women in Bellingham, Washington, called Amazing Women. She dreamed of expanding that vision into the automotive industry. When she connected with Maylan in 2019, her passion and creativity helped inspire what AWiA would become. Dori created the original logo and name and gave leadership in those early stages as the group found its footing.
Soon after, Melissa “Birdie” Patterson joined the effort. Having worked as the only woman in a shop since 1996, Birdie felt firsthand how isolating the industry could be – and how vital it was to connect with other women who understood. When she learned of AWiA’s mission, she felt it was a cause worth standing behind, so, teamed up with Maylan to guide AWiA’s vision. From day one through today, Birdie has been the steady presence working in the background to build, guide, and grow the vision of AWiA – organizing, supporting, and carrying forward the heartbeat of the movement.
By early 2020, AWiA launched its first offering: a weekly Wednesday roundtable on Zoom. Maylan funded it, Dori added her creative spark, and Birdie gave it consistency and momentum. Women began to show up; and they kept showing up.
As seasons shifted, Dori stepped away. But Maylan and Birdie continued to build, and AWiA continued to grow.
Recognizing the need for steady leadership, Birdie encouraged Maylan to connect with Tiffany Scherado, a strong industry voice she had heard about and admired. Tiffany had entered the automotive world in 2013, joining her father in business and eventually becoming the owner of Lifetime Transmissions. She quickly established herself as a respected leader in the industry, serving on the ATRA Board of Directors while building her own business.
Tiffany joined AWiA in 2021 as our facilitator and coordinator. Since then, she has:
- Led our weekly roundtables with care and consistency.
- Helped AWiA become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
- Facilitated scholarships at training events nationwide.
- Represented AWiA on the national stage, earning the Golden Wrench Award at ASTA in recognition of her leadership.
By 2025, AWiA had hosted its first Women’s Retreat in Park City, Utah, launched a Spanish-language roundtable, and made its international debut at Automechanika in Mexico City, where women already make up more than 30% of the automotive workforce.

Today, AWiA is more than meetings and retreats. It is scholarships, mentorship, and grassroots support for women in every corner of the industry. It is a voice for:
- Young women entering the trade through SkillsUSA and high school job fairs.
- Veterans transitioning from military service who are seeking meaningful new careers.
- Students, technicians, service advisors, and shop owners building their place in the industry.
And it is also a legacy. Before his passing, Maylan Newton asked Birdie and Tiffany to carry the torch – to keep building, keep lifting, and keep proving that in this industry, the right man for the job may just be a woman.
AWiA is proud to be that proof. We are here to connect, support, mentor, recruit, and retain women in automotive – across the U.S., in Latin America, and beyond. Because when women in automotive rise, the entire industry rises with us.
Women Supporting Women
Come join us on this empowering journey, and let’s drive towards a brighter, more inclusive future in the automotive industry together! Because here at AWiA, we believe that behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back.
